For families and casual hikers who want a taste of Sedona’s beauty without committing to an all-day trek, Huckaby Trail is a perfect pick. Stretching about 5.6 miles out and back, this moderately challenging hike combines red rock vistas, lush creekside shade, and the peaceful sound of flowing water. It’s a trail that offers both adventure and relaxation, making it one of Sedona’s most versatile options.
The trail begins just past Midgley Bridge off State Route 89A, where a small parking lot serves as the starting point. A Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful pass is required to park there. The path quickly leads hikers into a landscape filled with agaves, yucca, prickly pear cactus, and sweeping views of Sedona’s famous cliffs. While Huckaby is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, the wide trail and natural setting often give a sense of solitude.
Huckaby is best known for its connection to Oak Creek. After a moderate downslope, the path descends more steeply to the water’s edge. Along the way, hikers can enjoy shady cottonwoods and the cooling sounds of the creek. This is an excellent turnaround point for families with younger children who may not want to tackle the entire distance. Those who continue will find themselves rewarded with ever-changing views and the unique contrast of crimson rock and green riparian vegetation.
Wildlife adds to the experience. Coyotes, bobcats, and a variety of birds are occasionally spotted along the route. While sightings are not guaranteed, the mix of desert and creekside habitats makes Huckaby a trail full of life and small surprises.
The uphill return to the parking lot can be strenuous, especially in warmer weather, so hikers should plan accordingly. Still, with plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the scenery, even the climb back becomes part of the adventure.
Whether you go the full 5.6 miles or simply enjoy a shorter out-and-back walk down to Oak Creek, Huckaby Trail is a classic Sedona experience. It brings together everything that makes the red rock country special: iconic views, natural diversity, and the chance to slow down beside the water before climbing back into the open desert light.
