Sedona Is Supposed To Be A Quiet & Peaceful Place To Live:

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR By Herbert G.
Sedona is supposed to be a designated Dark Sky Community, and for good reason. The stars above this valley are one of our greatest treasures, and many of us have lived here long enough to remember when the night sky still looked the way it should. Along with that designation, the city has long had rules about lighting and noise. We also have ordinances that are supposed to keep things reasonable for residents who actually live and sleep here.
Lately, it seems those standards have slipped. Short-term rentals all over town have put up bright, glaring floodlights that shine well into the night, not to mention the constant noise from weekend parties.
What bothers me just as much, if not more, is that even city facilities and parks are no longer setting the right example. Some of the lights now remain on until 10 o’clock at night, and to my eye, many of them do not even appear compliant with the dark sky standards the city is supposed to uphold.
I may be showing my age, but I do not think it is unreasonable to expect Sedona to honor the commitments it has made. If we are going to call ourselves a Dark Sky Community, then the city itself should lead by example, and it should not turn a blind eye when commercial rentals ignore the rules.
Our skies are worth protecting, and so is the peace and quiet of those of us who still call this place home.
Sincerely,
Herbert G.
